2007 Kaimira Estate Nelson Sauvignon Blanc

WINE DETAILS

Fruit for this wine was sourced from several vineyards on the Waimea plains. The blocks were picked at varying ripeness levels to give a broad spectrum of flavours in the finished wine.

Crushing and pressing was reductive, avoiding juice oxidation and the majority of the clear juice was cool fermented with a variety of commercial yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Temperature control ensured the ferments were long and slow to retain primary fruit character.

A 9% portion was fermented in old oak barrels and matured on lees for several months to give added palate weight and texture without any true oak character being imparted to the wine.

For most of the tank fermented portion, post-fermentation lees influence was minimal to preserve fruit character and there was no malolactic fermentation. Bottled 5 September 2007.

TASTING NOTES

Lively nose shows plenty of fresh herbs and tropical notes including fresh melon and passionfruit. The melding of flavours continues on the palate with citrus, red apple and that tropical melon. It's technically dry, but well-ripened fruit has ensured a full mid-palate and brings a hint of sweetness, nicely balanced against a crisp green apple tartness.
