2009 Kaimira Estate Brightwater Gewurztraminer

2009 Kaimira Estate Brightwater Gewurztraminer

Winemaking notes

Fruit for this Gewurztraminer was sourced entirely from the estate vineyard in Brightwater, in the block adjacent to the winery. There was a reasonable fruit set this season and we decided to make a 'late harvest' style where the fruit was given a long 'hang time' to develop complex flavours and ripe phenolics The late autumn weather was incredible without a drop of rain for several weeks and the grapes remained clean. We picked by hand on April 23rd with a harvest Brix of 27°.

Grapes were destemmed and crushed into the press, then given 2 hours skin contact time to extract flavour from the very ripe skins. The juice was then settled and racked. Clear juice was fermented in stainless at low temperatures to retain aromatics. In order to retain some sugar and increase complexity, a portion was transferred to seasoned barrels to complete ferment while the balance was stopped to give a final sugar in the blend of 30g/l.

The wine was then stabilized and filtered prior to bottling in October 2009

Tasting notes

This is a full, rich Gewurztraminer which delivers the exotic characters of the variety. The nose is lifted with rose petal florals and musk, a layer of ripe peaches, seasoned with star anise and cinnamon spice. The medium sweet palate is balanced with soft acidity and spiciness. It has a lovely silky texture and finishes with a flourish of warm ginger spice.
