2008 Kaimira Estate Brightwater Gewürztraminer

Winemaking notes

Fruit for this Gewurztraminer was sourced from the 2 estate vineyards in Brightwater, the majority (90%) being from the recently established block at Livingston Road and the balance from the original home block at River Terrace. This represents the second crop from the Livingston vineyard, and fruit set went reasonably well to give ideal yields of 5T per hectare. The well ripened fruit was hand picked at 23.8° Brix.

Grapes were whole bunch pressed very gently to minimize phenolic pick up, settled and racked. Clear juice was fermented in stainless at low temperatures to retain aromatics. The ferment was stopped with a few grams of sugar remaining to give an off dry style, then allowed to rest on light lees for 4 months to improve mid-palate complexity.

A light skim milk fining was used to remove unwanted bitterness prior to stabilization and bottling in August 2008.

Wine analysis

Residual sugar 5.3g/l, Titratable acidity 5.9 g/l, pH 3.32, Alcohol 14.2%

Tasting notes

The nose shows rose petals, aniseed, gentle spice and juicy sultana (a ripe rather than dried fruit character). The wine is off dry with good palate weight and the aniseed spiciness is like a delicate seasoning that doesn≠t overpower the fruit. Texture is like a plump nectarine with citrus/navel orange flavours. Rose petal flavours linger on finish
